If a person is addicted to alcohol or drugs and they are not ready to stop the addiction, they must develop a strong denial system.
In his book Changing for Good', James Prochaska talks about the six stages of change that as fundamental to bring about permanent and lasting change. this is beginning to the recovery for the addict and the alcoholic.

The family or significant other has to also go through a process of change to break through their denial that they have been victimized by the addictive behavior.

A support system will give you access to realistic and appropriate resources to manage the problems.

Getting information about the problem
When people talk about the conditions and problems associated with the addiction they will learn to make healthy choices that support recovery.
